A New Technology, in Tune with National Nurses Week
When I learned of the American Nurses Association’s 2015 theme for National Nurses Week: “Ethical Practice, Quality Care,” I had to stop and think about what ethical practice might mean in today’s healthcare environment. To brush up on the topic I searched for the most recent version of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and found that it was updated this past January for the first time since 2001. After reviewing the nine provisions of the new code and their interpretive statements, I felt a healthy dose of pride for the many opportunities I’ve had to truly experience ethical practice and quality care in my 40-plus years as a nurse. Here’s what hit home for me as described in the Code of Ethics for Nurses:
“Nursing encompasses the protection, promotion and restoration of health and well-being; the prevention of illness and injury; and the alleviation of suffering, in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities and populations. … A code of ethics for the nursing profession makes explicit the primary obligations, values and ideals of the profession.”
As I reflect back on my 14 years as Chief Nursing Officer of the Department of Veterans Affairs, I find myself (in my post-retirement years) having the unique opportunity and privilege to “give back” by participating in an advisory capacity in key board positions such as the one I hold at AvaSure, a 7-year-old patient safety solutions company. My work with AvaSure is right in alignment with Provision 3 of the Code of Ethics for Nurses: “The nurse promotes, advocates for, and protects the rights, health and safety of the patient,” as well as the Interpretive Statement 3.4: Professional Responsibility in Promoting a Culture of Safety.
I am convinced that the AvaSys TeleSitter Solution has proven to be an essential tool for nursing surveillance. It’s comprehensive, clinically proven application for bedside safety is a vivid demonstration of what innovation can do to advance today’s healthcare transformation. As a nurse-led intervention, it is especially in tune with the nursing Code of Ethics and the week of celebration ahead.
I join my AvaSure colleagues in wishing our nation’s nurses a happy Nurses Week!
